Algeria (Al-Jumhūrīya al-Jazā'irīya ad-dīmūqrātīya ash-sha'bīya), is a presidential republic of Northwest Africa, with an area of more than 2,381,000 sq. km is, after Sudan, the second African country by extension, its capital is Algiers, the country is divided into 48 provinces. Former French colony, is washed to the north from the Mediterranean Sea, bordered to the east by Tunisia and Libya, to the south by Niger, Mali and Mauritania, to the west by Morocco. The Towards the north Algeria presents a coast section, called coastal Tell, long 1,000 km wide 100 km, which is home to most villages and agricultural land in the country. To the south of this fertile region are the mountains of Atlas parallel to the coast is the Tellian Atlas that reaches the maximum elevation with Lalla Khedidja (2,308 meters), here has its source the main river in the country, Cheliff river (725 km long), which flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Beyond the Tellian Atlas extends a vast arid and steppe plateau, rich in desert depressions and salted lakes called chotts, including Chott Melrhir, the lowest depression in the country, -40 meters below sea level. Further south are the mountain of Saharian Atlas that touches the 2,328 meters with the Djebel Chélia. Beyond the Saharian Atlas is the Sahara Desert, which covers about 80% of the territory of Algeria, the desert contain the sandy regions of the Great Eastern Erg and the Great Western Erg, while further south extends the rocky desert, bounded at the extreme south from the Hoggar (Ahaggar) massif, where is the highest peak in the country, Mount Tahat (2,918 meters). In the east, towards the border with Libya lies the mountain of Tassili n'Ajjer, which stretches for about 500 kilometers northwest and southeast direction, and reaches 2,158 meters with the mount Adrar Afao. From an economic point of view the country is rich in raw materials, in particular, there are huge reserves of oil and natural gas, plus manganese, uranium, iron, phosphate, zinc, copper. Agriculture produces wine, olive oil, citrus fruits, wheat, barley, dates and figs. The breeding is mainly aimed at sheep and goats. Significant the tourist attractions in the country, Romany archaeological sites along the coast, to the various and charming landscapes of the Sahara desert, the cave paintings of Tassili n'Ajjer.
