Cairo is the capital city of Egypt, and one of the largest metropolitan area in Africa, with a population of more than 17,000,000 inhabitans. Cairo is a city rich in history from the pharaohs, the Greeks, the Romans, early Christians, the advent of Islamin the city have occurred innumerable civilizations and ways of life. Cairo still today retains its atmosphere of lively and cosmopolitan city, with numerous sights and attractions to the tourist.

 

The city houses the most important Egyptian museum in the world, whose main attractions are the objects found in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. A few kilometers from Cairo, in the suburb of Giza, one finds the famous Pyramids and the Sphinx, and not far from Cairo are Heliopolis, Memphis and Saqqara, ancient cities rich in remains of the era of the pharaohs. The Christian and Islamic arts are well represented: the Hanging Church (Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church) is one of the oldest church of Egypt, Babylon Fortress, Saladin's Citadel, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-A'as that is the first mosque ever built in Egypt, the Al-Azhar University.
