Not far from the coast is also the depression of Sabkhat Ghuzayyil the lowest point of Libyan territory, -47 meters below sea level. A short distance from the coast are some hilly areas, to the west, in Tripolitania is Gebel Nefusa, which reaches 980 meters high, while to the west, in Cyrenaica is the Gebel el Achdar, which reaches 600 meters high. Besides these low hills lies the immense Libyan desert that occupies about 95% of the territory of the country, it is mainly made up of sandy desert areas and rocky desert areas and is sometimes interrupted by rare oasis (Cufra, Gialo, Giarabub). Situated at the south of the country near the borders with Chad are the slopes of the northern mountains of Tibesti Massif, the highest mountains of the Sahara desert, which in Chad largely exceeds the 3000 meters, but in Libya reaches the maximum height 2,267 meters with Mount Bikku Bitti. Libya is rich in oil and natural gas, which in recent decades have contributed greatly to raising the wealth of the country, which presents the highest annual per capita income of the African continent. Most industries are linked to food and petrochemical sectors. From the point of view of agriculture, are produced cereals, olives, tomatoes, grapes, almonds, tobacco, citrus fruits and dates, other activities are breed (sheep, goats), fishing (tuna, sardines and sponges). In rapidly developing tourism, thanks to ruins of archaeological areas (Leptis Magna, Cyrene, Sabratha), the desert landscapes (Tadrart Acacus) and the oasis (Ghadāmes). | |||||||||||||||||||
