The island of Reunion is an island in the Indian Ocean situated 700 km east of Madagascar and 200 km south-west of the island of Mauritius. Reunion is a French overseas department and is therefore part of the European Union, the capital is the city of Saint-Denis which is located in the northern part of the island. 
 

Reunion is a volcanic island, a wild beauty, rich in mountains and also a still active volcano, the Piton de la Fournaise (2631 m), while the highest mountain is the Piton des Neiges, another volcano, which exceeds 3 000 (3 070 meters) meters in height. The geography of Reunion is also characterized by three volcanic calderas the Cirque de Salazie, the Cirque de Cilaos and the Cirque de Mafate.

Area: 2 512 sqkm (Arable 19%, Pastures 5%, Forests and Woodlands 35%, Uncultivated and Unproductive 41%)

Population: 802 000 (2008 data) Creols (40%), Indians (28%), Europeans (26%), Chinese (3%).

State Capital: Saint Denis.

Languages: Official language is French. Spoken also a French Creole.

Religion: Christian 90% (Catholic (86%), Protestant (4%)), Hinduist, Muslim, Buddhist.

Currency: Euro (EUR)
