The Namib Rand Nature Reserve lies in the central-west Namibia, between Sesriem and Helmeringhausen, it covers an area of 172,200 hectares and is probably the largest private nature reserve of southern Africa, it border for nearly 100 km, on the west with the Namib-Naukluft National Park while to the east lies the chain of Nubib mountains (Nubibberge) reaching almost 2000 meters. The area occupied by the reserve is particularly evocative and rich in a wide variety of spectacular desert and semi-desert landscapes, in fact there are vast extent of grass savannah, extensive sand and gravel plains, red sand dunes, inselberg and mountains. The road C27 crosses the reserve from north to south and allow to enjoy this fascinating landscape. The Namib Rand Nature Reserve was established in 1992 in order to protect and preserve the eco-system and the animals of the area, the pre-Namib, an area rich in flora and fauna and very important to preserve biodiversity and facilitating seasonal migration of animals. The reserve thanks to the elimination of all types of fences and the low-impact tourism, has become a sanctuary for wildlife and a model for the conservation and management of a private area in Africa. Among the mammals in the Namib Rand there are many Oryx (Oryx gazelle or gemsbok) and the gazelles (Antidorcas marsupialis or springbok), among other species present there are antelope, Hartman and Burchell zebras, giraffes, alcelaphus (hartebeest), some small antelopes like klipspringer (Oreotragus oreotragus) and the steenbok (Raphicerus campestris), and baboons. Among the predators are leopards, hyenas, jackals, various species of foxes, African wild cats, the caracal; many are also reptiles and birds; rich is the variety of desert and semi-deserts plants present. | |||
