The Bahamas (The Commonwealth of the Bahamas) are a constitutional monarchy associated with the British Commonwealth, the archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, east of Florida, north of Cuba and west of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Bahamas consist of about 700 islands, of which about thirty are the most important islands, among them: Andros (the biggest island in the archipelago, 5,955 sqkm), Abaco, Little Abaco, Grand Bahama, Great Exuma, Great Inagua, Long Island, Mayaguana, New Providence, Eleuthera, Cat Islands, San Salvador.
The capital is Nassau, on New Providence, which has more than half of the population of the archipelago. The islands are flat, the highest point is reached by Mount Auvergne (63 meters) on Cat Island. The main resource of the islands, thanks to the subtropical climate and beautiful beaches, is tourism. Other important resources, thanks to favourable tax laws, are also the merchant navy, one of the most important of the world, and financial activities, the country is home to numerous banks. Among agricultural products are cultivated sugarcane, tomatoes, pineapple, sisal and coconut trees.
