On the island there are other three mountain ranges, to the north is the Cordillera Septentrional, which slightly exceeds the 1,200, while south of the Cordillera Central are the Sierra de Neiba, which rises above 2,200 metres, and the Sierra de Bahoruco. The island is rich in fertile land and rivers, including between the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera Septentrional, is the Cibao Valley, which together with the south-eastern coastal plain, is the most fertile area of the country. The economy of the Dominican Republic is based on agriculture (sugar cane, tobacco, bananas, coffee, rice, cocoa, maize, tomatoes, pineapples, coconuts) and on tourism, interesting are also subsoil resources (bauxite, nickel, iron, gold, silver and rock salt), not developed breeding livestock (cattle, pigs) and fishing.
