The climate of Guatemala is tropical and sub-tropical, but varies in relation to the altitude, in the highland, between 800 and 1600 metres above sea level, where are the major population centres of the country, climate is temperate year-round, with average minimum temperatures ranging between 12°C and 16°C, and maximum average temperatures between 29°C and 22°C, rains are concentrated in the months between May and October, while the dry season runs from November to April, in these areas the average annual rainfall is around 1,300 mm.
In the mountains above 2000 meters temperatures fall significantly with average temperatures between 5°C and 14°C and high temperature ranges between day and night. In the coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean and in the plains of Petén the climate is tropical, the temperature never goes below 25°C, with maximum during summer (July) 30°C-32°C, and an annual average of temperatures around 28°C, here the annual rainfall averages are around 1500 mm, in these areas sometimes during the rainy season (May-October) may also occur violent cyclones. The northern area of the country is the most rainy, with averages ranging from 1500 mm to 2500 mm and with the highest peaks of rain at the most exposed reliefs.
