Haiti (République d'Haïti) is a presidential republic occupying the western part of the island of Hispaniola (after Cuba, the second island of Great Antilles in size, 76,480 square km) it borders to the east with the Dominican Republic, to the south-west is separated from Jamaica from the Jamaica channel, while in the north-west the Windward Passage separates from Cuba, the capital city is Port-au-Prince. Several islands are part of the Haitian state including the island of Gonâve (743 sq km), Ile de la Tortue (180 sq km), l'Île Vache (52 sq. km) and the two Cayamites islands (45 sq km, Great Cayemite and Petite Cayemite).
 

Features of the country are the two long mountainous peninsulas that stretches in the north and in the south, between the two peninsulas is the Gulf of Gonâve, the northern peninsula stretches to the island of Cuba and the southern peninsula (Tiburon) stretches for more than 200 km to the island of Jamaica, it ends with the Massif de la Hotte, here is the Pic Macaya (2,347 metres), the second highest mountain in the country. The Haitian territory is largely mountainous, made up of a succession of chains towards north is the Northern Chain, the eastern and central area of Haiti consists of a high plateau, in the middle are the Montagnes Noires and the Chaîne de Matheaux, at the southern end is the Massif de la Selle that presents the highest mountain in the nation, the Pic de la Selle (2,680 metres). That, at the end of the eighteenth century, was the richest French colony in America, today is a poor country, among the poorest in the world, Haiti has a predominantly agricultural economy there are produced coffee, bananas, sugar cane, citrus, sisal, corn, rice, sweet potatoes, mango, cassava, beans, cocoa, coconuts, tobacco and cotton.

Population: 8 800 000 (2006 data) (Blacks 95%, Mulattos (descendants of European and African) 4%, Europeans 1%).

Language: Official languages are French and French Creole.

Religion: Roman Catholic 80%; Protestant 15%, Vudu.
