Panamá (República del Panamá) is a presidential republic in Central America, situated in the narrowest side of isthmus region of Central America, it's bordered to the west by Costa Rica, to the east by Colombia, washed to the north from the Caribbean Sea and to the Southfrom the Pacific Ocean, it's capital is the city of Panamá. The position of the country on the isthmus is of great strategic importance, since 1999 the Panamá Canal is under the control of the Panamá state, it allows quick link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Several islands are part of the state of Panamá as the islands of the archipelago of Bocas del Toro (near the border with Costa Rica) and San Blas (near the border with Colombia) placed on the side of the Caribbean Sea, while on the Pacific Ocean are the Archipiélago de las Perlas (in the center of the Gulf of Panamá), Isla de Coiba (Golfo de Chiriqui) and the island of Taboga.
 

The territory of Panamá is crossed throughout its length by a series of mountain ranges divided by a central depression, where was built the Panamá Canal, north of the canal is the Cordillera Central where is the highest mountain in the country, Barú Volcano (3,474 meters), beyond the canal, towards the border with Colombia are the mountains of the Cordillera de San Blas and Serrania of Darién. Panamá economy has its main source of revenue from the Panamá Canal, but the country is also an important financial centre, fisheries (crabs) are very important, Panamá has one of the largest merchant fleets of the world. Agriculture produces bananas, coffee, cocoa, maize, rice, potatoes, cassava, tomatoes, sugar cane and tobacco, while farming is concentrated mainly on cattle, great importance has the exploitation of forests.

Population: 3 320 000 (2006 data) (Mestizos (descendants of European and Amerindians) 70%, Mulattos (descendants of European/Amerindians and Africans) 10%, Europeans 10%, Asian 5%, Amerindians 5%.

State Capital: Panamá.

Language: Official language is Spanish. English is also spoken.

Religion: Roman Catholic 80%; Protestant 10%, Muslim 4%.
