New York is located at the mouth of the Hudson River in the Atlantic Ocean, the city lies on several islands (Manhattan, Staten Island, Long Island) and on land, and is made up of 5 districts of Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. New York, famous for its skyscrapers, is now the most populous U.S. cities with more than 8 000 000 inhabitants, whereas the metropolitan area are nearly 19 000 000, the city is a world hub with regard to finance, commerce, culture and industry, its port and its airport are among the largest in the world, also is home to numerous global institutions like the United Nations. 

The Bay of New York was discovered, in 1524, from Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, but the area was colonized only at the beginning of the seventeenth century by the Dutch, in 1626 they founded in the island of Manhattan a fort called Amsterdam, around which was built the city of Nieuw Amsterdam (now New York), capital of the colony of New Netherlands (Nieuw Holland), a Dutch colony which stretched from Connecticut to Delaware and inland up to Albany.
