NEW YORK

In 1664, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the British occupied the city and renaming it in honor of the Duke of York, New York, with the Treaty of Breda (1667) the city was awarded to the British, but during the third Anglo-Dutch War in 1673 the Dutch regained the city, and held possession of it until 1674 when it was ceded newly to Great Britain. In the following centuries New York grew significantly, becoming the most important and populous city in the United States of America.
