Recife, capital of Pernambuco, has 1 700 000 inhabitants, while in its metropolitan area there are over 3 700 000, together with Salvador (Bahia) and Fortaleza, Recife is one of the most important industrial cities of the Nordeste of Brazil. The city extends on two islands and along the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the rivers Capibaribe and Beberibe. It was founded by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, but remained a small village subsidiary of Olinda until 1630, when Recife was occupied by Dutch and became the capital of their possessions in Brazil, they built a new city Mauritsstad, which became in the years of their rule one of the most prosperous commercial centers of South America, the Dutch occupation ended in 1654.
