Falkland Islands (Falkland Islands or Islas Malvinas) are located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, 450 km east of the southern coasts of Argentina and north-east of Tierra del Fuego. Falkland archipelago, a British overseas territory, is formed by the two largest islands of East Falkland and West Falkland, split between them by Falkland Sound, and about 200 smaller islands. The main port and capital of the archipelago is Stanley.

 

The territory of the two main islands is hilly, the highest peaks are Mount Usborne (705 metres) in the Eastern and Mount Adam (698 metres) in the West, the coasts, very articulate, are flat, and sometimes marshy. Sheep farming was formerly the main source of income for the islands, the main products exported were wool and skins, now is fishing the largest part of the economy and brought increasing income from tourism. The Falklands archipelago is claimed by Argentina.

Population: 3 060 (2005 data) Europeans 100% (English (Scottish and Welsh) 70%, French, Gibraltarian, Portuguese, Scandinavian, Saint Helena and Chilean).

Capitale: Stanley.

Language: Official language is English.

Religion: Majority Protestant, Roman Catholic minority.

Currency: Falkland Pound (FKP).
