Guyana (Republic of Guyana) is a presidential republic located just north of the equator, in the northern part of South America, is washed in the north-east from the Atlantic Ocean, it borders to the west with Venezuela and Brazil, to the south with Brazil, to the east with Suriname. Georgetown, the capital, located at the mouth of the Demerara river, is the main port and the only real city in the country. The territory has a flat and often low marshland area along the coast, where lies the capital and most towns.

 

The interior of the country consists of low highlands (around 200 metres) and dense forests, sometimes savannah. Towards the west and south are some mountain tabular form structures, along the border with Venezuela, Serra Pacaraima, where is the maximum height of the country, Mount Roraima (2,810 metres), on the border between Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil; to the south towards the border with Brazil is the Serra Acaraí that slightly exceeds the 1,000 meters. The main rivers of Guyana are the Essequibo, Demerara, Courantyne and Berbice. The country is rich in mineral resources, are extracted bauxite (one of the leading world producers), gold, diamonds, asbestos and manganese. Among the main agricultural products of the country are rice, sugarcane, coffee, cocoa, bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, corn, cassava. Substantial wealth is the forest, very rich in hardwood timber. Modest are farming (pigs, sheep, goats and poultry), and fishing (especially shrimp). The industry is limited to the processing of agricultural and mineral products (sugar mills, distilleries, breweries, tobacco manufacturers). The main tourist attraction in the country are the Kaieteur Falls (226 meters jump), along the Potaro River, one of the most spectacular in the world.

Population: 750 000 (2007 data) (Asian Indians 43%, Africans 30%, Mestizos (descendants of European and Amerindian) and Mulattos (descendants of African and European) 17%, Amerindians 9%, Chinese and Europeans).

State Capital: Georgetown.

Language: Official language is English. Spoken English Creole, Hindi, Urdu, Akawaio, Wai-Wai, Arawak and Macushi.

Religion: Christian 48% (Protestant 36%, Catholic 12%), Induist 29%, Muslim 9%, Bahá'í 7%.

Currency: Guyana Dollar (GYD).
