Suriname (Republiek van Suriname) is a republic located just north of the equator, in the northern part of South America, it's washed to the north from the Atlantic Ocean, it borders to the west with Guyana, to the south with Brazil, to the east with French Guayana. Paramaribo, the capital, located on the left bank of the Suriname River approximately 20 km from the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, is the main port and the only real city in the country. The territory has a flat area along the coast, where are the capital and most of the towns. The interior of the country is made up of a central plateau with dense forests, sometimes from savannah, to the south there is a mountainous region, rich in forests valuable essences, which culminates with the mount Julianatop (1280), on the border with Brazil, is the Serra Tumucumaque. There are numerous rivers, the Maroni (Marowijne), which marks the border with French Guiana, the Corantijn (Courantyne), which marks the border with Guyana, the Coppename, Saramacca and Suriname. A big dam forms Lake Brokopondo (1,560 sq km, also known as Prof. Lake. Dr. Ir. WJ van Blommesteinmeer), it's located along the Suriname River. Important are the mineral and forest resources of the country, including large deposits of bauxite, manganese, copper, nickel, platinum, gold, oil, the main industrial activities are related to these two areas. Agriculture is practiced in a very small area of the national territory, are cultivated rice, palm oil, sugar cane, bananas and coffee. Fishing, especially shrimp, is another important item of the country's economy.
