Azerbaijan (Azarbaijchan Respublikasi) is a presidential republic located in the southern Caucasus, bordered to the west by Armenia and Georgia, to the north with Russia, to the south with Iran, while in the east it is washed by the Caspian Sea, it has for capital the city of Baku. Azerbaijan territory including the autonomous province of Nagorno-Karabakh and the autonomous republic of Nahičevan, enclosed between Armenia, Iran and Turkey, and separated by a strip of Armenian territory from the rest of Azerbaijan.
 

The territory of Azerbaijan is predominantly mountainous, there are three major mountain ranges that cross the country, towards the north, along the border with Russia are the mountains of the Greater Caucasus, where rises the highest mountain in the country, Mount Bazardüzü Dağı (4,485 metres), to the west, along the border with Armenia is the chain of the Lesser Caucasus, between the two mountainous systems extends the valley of the Kur River, the main river in the country, which flows in the Caspian Sea. Situated at the south of the country along the border with Iran are the Talysh Mountains. The economy of Azerbaijan is based on the mining and oil refining, thanks to rich deposits of oil and natural gas of the country. Important are also agriculture (rice, cereals, cotton, tobacco, fruits, tea, citrus fruits, corn) and breeding (cattle, sheep, silkworm).

Population: 8 600 000 (2008 data) (Azeris 87%, Talysh 5%, Lezgins 2%, Russians 1,7%, Armenians 1,5%).

State Capital: Baku.

Languages: Azerbaijani language is the only official state language. Spoken the Russian.

Religion: Muslim 95% (Shia 80%, Sunni 15%), Orthodox Christian 3%.
