Saudi Arabia (Al-Mamlaka al-'Arabiya as-Sa'udiya, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) is a kingdom of the Middle East, which occupies a large part of the Arabian peninsula, the country is bordered to the north by the Jordan and Iraq, to the north-east with Kuwait, in the east with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, to the south with Oman and Yemen, to the west is washed from the Red Sea and to the east from the Persian Gulf. The most important cities, as well as the capital Riyadh, are Jiddah, Mecca, Medina, Ad-Dammam. The territory of Saudi Arabia is more than half made up of desert, in the north of the country are the southern Syriac desert extending southward to form the Nafud desert. To the west, along the coast of the Red Sea rise two mountain ranges, those of Hejaz in the north and Asir in the south, they are part of the vast escarpment of the Rift Valley, which forms the Red Sea, between these mountains the Hejaz rarely exceed 2,000 metres (at the north lies the Jabal al-Lawz, 2403 meters), while those of Asir rise in a few points above 3,000 metres, reaching the highest elevation in the Jabal Sawda (3,133 metres). Besides the mountains extends toward the east, the great plateau of Nejd (Neged), a rocky region alternating small stretches of sandy desert and isolated mountain formations, the height of the plateau varies between 750 and 1,500 metres. East of Nejd (Neged) the plateau gradually descends toward the Persian Gulf, in an area where there are many oases, along the coast of the Persian Gulf, is the depression of Al Hasa, where are the major deposits of oil of the country. In the south-east, extends the largest desert in the country, the Rub 'al Khali (600,000 sq km), an arid sand desert, one of the most inhospitable areas on the planet Earth.
