CLIMATE: WHEN TO GO TO THAILAND

The climate of Thailand is tropical, warm and wet, dominated by monsoons. The country is characterized by two seasons, the wet summer season between May and October and the dry winter season between November and April, the months between March and May are the hottest months of the year. The rainy season comes with the monsoon in the south-west, from the months of May and lasts until the month of October, the rains often occur in the afternoon, but sometimes can rain for days. 

 

The capital Bangkok has a hot and humid tropical climate, the hottest month is April with average maximum temperatures of 35°C and average minimum of 26°C, December is the cooler month with average maximum temperatures of 31°C and average minimum of 21°C. The rainy season is from May to October, the average annual rainfall in Bangkok is 1500 mm. 

The north and north-east of the country is generally cooler than the capital, the city of Chiang Mai has always a tropical climate, but less humid and cooler during the winter months, the rains also occur during the monsoon in the south-west between May and October, but the average annual rainfall in Chiang Mai at just over 1100 mm. 

The south of the country has more constant temperature throughout the year and more intense rainfall, significant changes will have in the amount of rain between the towns along the coast of the Andaman Sea and those that are along the Gulf of Thailand. In the island of Phuket, located in the Andaman Sea, the warmest month is the month of March with average maximum temperatures of 34°C and average minimum of 25°C, the average minimum temperatures, even in the cooler months winter, remain stable at around 24°C, the maximum average ever not fall below 31°C. The rainy season is from May to October, the average annual rainfall in Phuket is over 2200 mm. The island of Koh Samui, located in the Gulf of Thailand, has temperatures similar to those of Phuket, but the rains are less abundant, the annual average is 1950 mm, the rainy season starts with the monsoon in the north-east, in October and ends in December, the driest months are those between January and April. 

The months between November and February are the best for a visit in Thailand, more fresh, dry and with a lower humidity.
