| The
Portuguese Fortress of São Sebastião (Mozambique), Mozambique. Ilha de Moçambique is an UNESCO World Heritage site
since 1991. Inscription criteria: The fortified city
of Mozambique is located on this island, a former Portuguese trading-post on the route to
India. Its remarkable architectural unity is due to the consistent use, since the 16th
century, of the same building techniques, building materials (stone or macuti) and
decorative principles. UNESCO and the Government of Mozambique signed an agreement, in
2003, for the rehabilitation of one of the most important monuments on the Island of
Mozambique, a site inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1991 - the San Sebastian
Fortress.
