The rainfall varies widely depending on the exposure to winds, areas exposed to the north-east winds are much more rainy, on the highest peaks of the mountains Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, in winter there is snow. The areas under the wind, that is the south-western coasts are dry and sunny. Regarding the average annual rainfall it varies from 220 mm in Kawaihae, on the island of Hawaii, to 11,280 mm of Mount Waialeale on the island of Kauai, one of the rainest places on Earth. In the city of Honolulu, the average annual rainfall is 550 mm, while in the city of Hilo on the island of Hawaii is over 3,200 mm. The sea water surface temperature varies between 24°C in February and 27°C in September and October. The best time for a trip to Hawaii Islands are the months between April and September.
