The Federated States of Micronesia is a federal republic located north of equator in the Pacific Ocean, northeast of Papua New Guinea. The state is made up of 4 state forming part of the Caroline Islands: Yap, Chuuk (Truk), Pohnpei (Ponape), and Kosrae (Kusiae), the federal capital is Palikir, on the island of Pohnpei. The islands are in part volcanic islands and in part coral atolls, the most important island is Pohnpei (334 sq km), a rugged volcanic island, home of the state capital, Palikir, the island rises up to 791 metres, Totolom mountain, the highest peak of the state. Are part of the state of Pohnpei the islands: Pohnpei, Oroluk, Ngatik, Pakin, Mokil, Pingelap, Nukuoro, Kapingamarangi, Minto Reef. Are part of the state of Yap (119 sq km) the islands: Yap, Ulithi, Fais, Sorol, Ngulu, Eauripik, Woleai, Farauleup, Ifalik, Olimarao, Elato, Lamotrek, Gaferut, West Fayo, Satawal, Pikelot. Are part of the state of Chuuk (127 sq km) the islands: Chuuk (Truk), formed by a group of islands within a single coral lagoon, Puluwat, Pulap, Pulusuk, Namonuito, Fayu, Nomwin, Murilo, Hall, Losap, Namoluk, Mortlock. Kosrae (110 sq km) island is the only part of the state with the same name, it's also the easternmost island of the archipelago, is a mountainous island of volcanic origin, 634 metres its highest peak. In the maritime area of the Federated States of Micronesia, between the islands of Yap and Guam, is the Challenger Deep the deepest surveyed point in the Oceans (-10 911 meters), part of the Mariana Trench. The economy of the Federated States of Micronesia is based on fishing and agriculture (coconuts (copra), cassava, bananas and batate). Tourism is a potential resource of the country.
