Pitcairn Island, located in the South Pacific, just south of the Tropic of Capricorn, is a British colony made up of 4 islands, Pitcairn (4.6 sq km), Ducie (0.7 sq km), Henderson (37, 3 sq km) and Oeno (0.65 sq km) of which only one, Pitcairn, inhabited. The island, which are one of the most remote inhabited places on the planet, is isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the closest islands are the Gambier Islands belonging to French Polynesia that are located approximately 500 km to the west, while the eastbound nearest land is the Easter Island that is about 2000 km. Adamstown is the only settlement on the island, Pitcairn is an island of volcanic origin with steep cliffs overlooking the sea and a rugged and hilly interior, which reaches the maximum height with Pawala Valley Ridge (347 metres). The terrain is pretty fertile and suitable for agriculture, there are grown coconut trees, bananas, oranges, other activities are fishing and crafts. Pitcairn was discovered in 1767, by the English captain, Philip Carteret, the name, Pitcairn, was that of sailor that sighted it first. The inhabitants are descendants of sailors of the Bounty mutineers and tahitian women that had followed them, which landed there in Pitcairn in 1790. The remains of the ship (the bell and the anchor), which was sunk by the mutineers, were found in the southern part of Pitcairn in 1957, are now visible in the square of Adamstown. Henderson Island, an atoll which is located about 150 km north-east of Pitcairn, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
