The Tonga islands climate is tropical, with a cooler and less rainy season between May and November, and a warmer and rainy season between December and April. In the capital Nuku'alofa average maximum temperatures varies between 29°C in January and 24°C in August, the average minimum varies between 23°C in February and 18°C in August. The rains are more abundant between December and March, March is the most rainy month in absolute, the average annual precipitation is 1600 mm in Tongatapu island and in the group of Haapai islands, while it is 2200 mm in Vava'u and 2600 mm in Niuatoputapu. The months between December and April are the months in which the islands can get the tropical storms, the most northern islands, which are nearest the equator, are more at risk with regard to hurricanes.
 

The best time for a trip to the Tonga islands are the relatively dry months between May and November.
