Most of the islands are high islands of volcanic origin and are often surrounded by coral reefs, in the archipelago there are present many active volcanoes, such as the Mount Yasur (361 metres) on the island of Tanna, Ambae volcano (1,496 metres ) in the island with the same name, the volcano Marum (1,334 metres) on the island of Ambrym, Mount Gharat (797 metres) on the island of Gaua, the Lopevi (1413 metres) on the island of same name, and the Mount Suretamate (921 metres) on the island of Vanua Lava. The highest mountain of the archipelago is Mount Tabwemasana (1,879 metres) on the island of Espiritu Santo. The main economic resource of the archipelago is agriculture (coconut palm, cocoa, coffee, fruit, taro, cassava, bananas, batate and vegetables), fisheries, forestry and livestock farming (cattle and pigs). The subsoil resources are represented by manganese minerals present in the island of Efate. Tourism is constantly expanding as well the financial assets and off-shore banking. | |||||||||||||||||||
