Albania (Republika e Shqiperise) is a parliamentary republic of south-western Balkans. The capital is Tirana, the main cities, in addition to state capital, are Shkoder, Durres, Vlora, Elbasan and Gjirokaster. Albania borders with Serbia and Montenegro to the north, with the Republic of Macedonia to the north-east, with Greece to the south-east and are overlooks the Adriatic Sea and the Otranto Channel to the west.

The Albanian territory is largely mountainous, excluding a small flat strip along the coast, the mountains that mark the country form the so-called Albanian Alps that are part of the Dinaric Alps, the highest peak in Albania is Mount Korab (2,764 metres). Between the mountains open furrows deep valley where the rivers flow in the Adriatic Sea. The most important rivers are the Drin, the Semana and Voiussa.

 

Partially Albanians are the lakes of Shkodra, Ohrid and Prespa, among these the largest is Shkodra Lake (Liqeni i Shkodrës, about 400 square kilometers), which is the largest Lake of the Balkan peninsula, it is located in the north of the country along the border with Montenegro; in east Albania are Lake Ohrid (Liqeni Ohrit, 358 sq. km), on the border with Macedonia, the Great Prespa (Prespa e Madhi, 314 sq. km), on the border with Macedonia and Greece, and the Small Prespa (Prespa e Vogel, 47 sq. km) on the border with Greece. 

The country is poor in resources, at the basis of the Albanians economy are breeding (sheep and goats), agriculture (corn, wheat, olives) and the exploitation of mineral resources (oil, chromium, copper, nickel, lignite). Fishing is quite developed along the coasts and lakes. The industry is based on textile plants, enrichment of copper ore, production of cigarettes.
