BAD GASTEIN

 

Bad Gastein is an important holiday center of southern Austria, in the province of Salzburg, 80 km to south of the chief town. Situated at 1083 masl. in the Gasteiner Tal, a narrow gorge of the High Taurus acrossed from the Ache river, that here develops two cascades of 63 and 85 m, it's a SPA (radioactive waters) and winter sports town. It's the most important thermal locality of Austria, one of most famous of Europe, with a rich history: here came to make thermal cures the Hasburg nobility. The town was also theatre of some important conferences, in 1865 it was center of the “The Gasteiner Convention” which sealed the peace between Denmark, Prussia and Austria; in 1878 in Bad Gastein the “Dreibund (Triple Union)” was sealed between Austria, Germany and Italy.

Bad Gastein main attractions: Bad Gastein is situated to the feet of Graukogel (2492 m) to south-east and of Stubnerkogel (2246 m) to the west, on the shores of the Gaistener Ache river, than develop beautiful waterfalls just in the middle of the town. The 18 thermal sources that gush out from the feet of the Graukogel have been used since the medieval age. Are here infact the more radioactive waters of Europe, they have a temperature of 30-47°C and are particularly indicated for the cure of rheumatisms, lesions, circolation disturbs. Numerous and equipped of every comfort are the thermal complexes. On the elegant main square situated between the mountains to the right of the river are beautiful old buildings. From here starts the Kaiser Wilhelm-Promenade, a charming walk with panoramic views. From the walk can be reached the church of St . Nikolaus, a gothic construction of the 1400's with frescoes of the beginning of the 1500's.

The last village of the valley is Bockstein (1175 m), it can be reached, beyond in car, also on foot from Badgastein with the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Promenade, a 3 km walk between the green of the grass. This satellite village of Badgastein is the base for alpine excursions in the High Taurus mountains and it's also an important thermal locality. On a hill, a small sanctuary is found, with oval dome built in neoclassic style (1767). A 6 km toll road arrives to the sky center of Gastein Sport, situated at 1588 masl.
