Graz is the capital city of Styria in Austria and the second-largest city in Austria (around 285.000 inhabitants) and an important university city. Graz's "Old Town" is one of the best-preserved city centers in Central Europe, for this in 1999 the historic centre was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Graz is a particularly fine example of a central European urban complex which experienced many centuries of Habsburg rule. The old city is a harmonious blend of the architectural styles and artistic movements that have succeeded each other since the Middle Ages, together with cultural influences from the neighbouring regions. For centuries now the original town centre, nestled at the foot of the Schlossberg with its famous Clock Tower, has been a repository of the architectural styles of each era, from Gothic, Renaissance and baroque to historical eclecticism and Jugendstil.

Graz main attractions:The historic centre of the city of Graz reflects artistic and architectural movements originating from the Germanic region, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean, for which it served as a crossroads for centuries, it's an exceptional example of a harmonious integration of architectural styles from successive periods, the greatest architects and artists of these different regions expressed themselves forcefully here and thus created brilliant syntheses. In 16th century the city architecture came redesigned from Italian renaissance artists and architects. One of the most famous buildings in this style is the Landhaus, realized from Domenico dell'Allio, that it was used as government palace. The symbol of Graz was the Schlossberg, the castle that dominated from a hill the city center, today after the partial demolition following the defeat of Austria by Napoleonic forces at the Battle of Wagram in 1809, remains only the Clock Tower (Uhrturm), one of the symbols of the city, reachable through a funicular from which it is enjoyed a beautiful panorama on the city. Of remarkable interest are also the town hall (Rathaus), the cathedral (Dom), the Burg (castle), the Gemaltes Haus (a painted house, in Herrengasse) and the theatre (Schauspielhaus); little outside from the city center it's the castle (Schloss) of Eggenberg, now a museum, in whose vicinities is one of the most beautiful panoramic views on the city, the Ruine Gösting.
