Linz is an industrial Austrian city (190,000 inhabitants), is a river-port on the Danube and it's capital of the province of Upper Austria, it's almost halfway between Salzburg and Vienna. The city was founded by the Romans, who called it "Lentia". During the Middle Ages it became an important commercial center along the Danube and was the seat of the provincial government of the Holy Roman Empire. For a brief period, at the end of the fifteenth century under Frederick III, Linz was also the main center of the Hapsburg Empire. The old town of Linz presents valuable palaces and Baroque churches. Among the notable buildings are the Old Town Hall and the Bischofshof, the residence of the bishops, which is the most important baroque palace in the city. The Castle of Linz originally built in 799 was completely rebuilt in 1477 from the Emperor Frederick III, underwent various vicissitudes in the following centuries, the fortress today, which was partly rebuilt between 1953 and 1963, houses the Museum of Upper Austria, where have kept weapons, musical instruments, coins. |

Linz main attractions: In the middle of the main square, one of the most beautiful Austrian squares, is the Trinity Column in white marble, 20 meters tall it was completed in 1723 by Sebastian Stumpfegger. The rectangular shaped square is full of premises and shops. It's worth also allow a walk along the pedestrian Landstrass, that in addition to shops it presents interesting churches and monuments. Among the churches are the Pöstlingbergkirche, located in a beautiful spot above the city, it was built in 1748. While the church of S. Martin is the oldest church in Austria, date back to 799. The old cathedral designed by Pietro Francesco Carlone, was built between 1669 and 1678. The New Cathedral St. Mary's Cathedral (Mariendom), built between 1855 and 1924, is the largest of Austria, inside can accommodate up to 20000 people, to be noted the high bell-tower that reaches 134 meters high. In the vicinity of Linz is the Stift St. Florian, an Augustinian Abbey which dates from 819 aD, but restored in Baroque style in 1688, it is famous for its ancient organ. Another interesting trip can be made in Steyr, an old Austrian city. Not far from Linz is also the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen. Public transportation in Linz: The city has a tramway network recently modernized with the use of new "Eurotram" and the construction of an underground passage at the Central Station. Linz Climate: The climate of Linz is characterized by the strong thermic difference of temperature, which favor snow and cold winters, with temperatures below zero, and rainy and cool summers. The rainy months are those ranging from June to August, with annual rain average around 860 mm.
