Salzburg, capital of the region of the same name, is located in north-central Austria. The city has nearly 150,000 inhabitants is the fourth largest city in Austria and is located on the banks of the river Salzach, bordering northern Alpine chain. The name Salzburg (Salzburg) means "Salt Castle" and is linked to the wealth that was more important for the city, salt, which in medieval times was extracted from rock salt mines of nearby mountains. Salzburg, called at the time Juvavum, was, from 45 AD, a Roman municipality in the province of Noricum. In the Christian era was founded a monastery, then starting from 8th century the town became property of bishops, thanks to a donation of the Duke of Bavaria, Salzburg was then an archdiocese with jurisdiction over Bavaria and most of today's Austria. The city center of Salzburg with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centers in Austria, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is know as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that in this city was born in 1756.

Salzburg was able to keep up today an extraordinary urban complex, developed during the period between the Middle Ages and the nineteenth century during which Salzburg was a city-state ruled by prince-archbishop. His Gothic-Flamboyant art attracted many craftsmen and artists before being transformed through the work of Italian architects Vincenzo Scamozzi and Santino Solari, to the jewel of baroque architecture that can still admire today.
