Unesco has inscribed 8 Austrian sites in the World Heritage List: the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg (1996), the Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn (1996), the Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape (1997), the Semmering Railway (1998), the Historic Centre of the City of Graz (1999), the Wachau Cultural Landscape (2000), the Fertö/Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape (2001), and the Historic Centre of Vienna (2001).

Between the properties submitted on the Tentative List are: the cultural landscape of Innsbruck-Nordkette/Karwendel (2002), the iron trail with Erzberg and the old town of Steyr (2002), the old part of Hall in Tirol (1994), Bregenzerwald (Bregenz forest) (1994), the Abbey of Kremsmünster (1994), the Abbey of Heiligenkreuz (1994), the Castle of Hochosterwitz (1994), the Cathedral of Gurk (1994), the National Park of Hohe Tauern (2003), besides it has been demanded to include also Schloss Eggenberg as extension of the Historic Centre of Graz (2005).
