Cavtat (Ragusavecchia), is a town of about 2000 inhabitants that overlooks the Bay of Zupa in Konavle, about 20 km south of Dubrovnik (Ragusa). Founded by the Greeks in the fourth century BC with the name of Epidauros, when it came under Roman domination in 228 BC the city changed name in Epidaurum, subsequently became a Roman colony. Around 614 d.C. the city was plundered and destroyed by Slavs and Avars, it was after this episode that people took refuge on an island not far, that later was united with the mainland, it gave rise to the city of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). The name Ragusavecchia originates from Civitas Vetus, the name under which the founders of Ragusa called their old city. The Dubrovnik airport is located near Cavtat.
