The island of Hvar (Lèsina) (12000 inhabitants) is the longest among the islands of Dalmatia, with a coastal development of 270 km, the island has an area of 300 sq km, and reaches the maximum height of 628 m; main centers are Hvar (Lèsina), Jelsa (Gelsa), Stari Grad (Cittavecchia), Vrboska (Verbosca) and Sućuraj. Situated in a picturesque natural environment, the island is rich in green, covered with pine forests, olive groves, vineyards, fields of lavender and rosemary. In 1997 Traveller magazine has included Hvar among the 10 most beautiful islands in the world. Hvar (Lesina) main attractions: The town of Hvar (Lesina) is the largest and most important city of the island and also the main tourist centre. Here are happily cast a rich historical and cultural heritage, a beautiful nature and a present mundane, turned to tourism. The city is dominated by some fortifications that offer a beautiful view on the town and surrounding islands. All the old town of Hvar is beautiful, with narrow and paved streets, the Cathedral of St. Stephen, built between the sixteenth and seventeenth century is probably the main attraction. Other interesting buildings are the Franciscan Monastery, the Arsenal and the theatre of Hvar. Sucuraj (St. George) is a small fishing village that is the extreme eastern part of the island. Stari Grad (Cittavecchia) is located on the northern coast, the village is characterized by a castle from the sixteenth century. Jelsa about 27 km from Hvar is known for his closeness to sandy beaches and is also the port of departure for the Zacevo island, a paradise for naturists. The most beautiful beaches of Hvar are on the islands of Pakleni otoci located in front of Hvar, between these Jerolim (Geronimo), Ždrilica, Palmižana, Pokonji dol and Mekicevica. How to get there: The port of Stari Grad (Hvar) is connected with daily ferry services with Split (Split), Dubrovnik, Korcula (Curzola) and Rijeka (Fiume). Climate in Hvar (Lesina): The island of Hvar (Lesina) is characterised by a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and mild winters. Average temperatures of 8.4°C in January and 24.8°C in July. The average temperature of the sea in summer is about 26°C. The best months to visit are those ranging from April to October.
