The island of Korcula (Korčula) (17000 inhabitants) is an island of Dalmatia with an area of 279 sq km, 46.8 km long and 7.8 kilometers wide, which reaches the maximum height of 568 m with the Monte Klupca. The island is within walking distance from the mainland and only a stretch of sea of 2 km the divided it from peninsula Pelješac (Sabbioncello). The main centres are Curzola (Korčula), Vela Luka, Blato and the villages of Lumbarda and Račišċe. The economy in addition to tourism, is based on agriculture, there are cultivated vines, olive trees, fruit trees, are also important fishing and shipbuilding. 

Korčula (Curzola) main attractions: The town of Korčula (Curzola) is the most important city of the island and also the main tourist centre. The old city is surrounded by a beautiful town-walls. Among the buildings in the historic centre stands out the Cathedral of St. Mark, whose construction was begun in the thirteenth century, inside you can see elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance period. Other buildings of interest are the Franciscan Monastery (15th century) with its beautiful Gothic-Venetian cloister, the palace of the Venetian governor, and many noble Venetian palaces of the 15th-16th. The island boasts (according to many historians without foundation) to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, near the Cathedral of St. Mark, you can visit what is referred to as birthplace of Marco Polo. 

 

How to get there: The links with the rest of Croatia are served by ferries that depart from the peninsula of Peljesac (Orebic), from Dubrovnik, Split, the island of Hvar, Rijeka and a daily line between Vela Luka, Split and Lastovo.  

Korcula (Curzola) Climate:

The island of Korcula (Curzola) is characterised by a pleasant Mediterranean climate with hot summers and dry and cool and windy winters. Average temperatures of 9.1 °C in January and 24.9 °C in July and August. The average temperature of the sea in summer is 24 °C. The island has about 2700 hours of sunshine annually, and is one of the sunny islands of the Eastern Adriatic. The average annual rainfall is about 1100 mm. The most humid months are those ranging from October to January. The best months to visit are those from May to September.
