The Plitvice lakes National Park (Plitvicka Jezera) is located, inside Croatia, in the region of Lika, in the mountains of Mala Kapela and Pljesevica to an altitude of nearly 700 masl and at a distance of 50 km from the sea. In 1979 the Plitvice lakes National Park (Plitvicka Jezera) was included by UNESCO in the list of world heritage sites. The Plitvice Lakes represent the most famous national park in Croatia and one of natural beauty of Europe.

Plitvice main attractions: The Plitvice Lakes National Park (Plitvicka Jezera Nacionalni Park) consists of 16 lake basins communicating with each other through waterfalls created by deposits in layers of travertine. The system of lakes is divided between the high lakes (Proscansko, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko Jezero (Great Lake), Malo Jezero (Little Lake), Vir, Galovac, Milino, Jezerce, Burgeti, Kozjak) and the lower lakes (Milinovac , Gavanovac, Kaluderovac, Novakovica Brod). The lakes are placed at a height ranging between 639 m of Lake Proscansko and 503 of Lake Novakovica Brod. The area of national park covers an area of 295 sq km, rich in forests and woods, forests surrounding the park are home to bears, wolves and many species of birds.

How to get there: The Plitvice lakes National Park is located inside Croatia near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina to 40 km from the Bosnian town of Bihac. The park is easily reachable from Rijeka (Fiume), which is 150 km, is from Zadar (Zara) (150 km), from Zagreb (140 km), from Sibenik (190 km). 

Plitvice Climate: The climate of Plitvice is characterized by a climate of transition between the coastal and Continental climate, the influence of the sea is little relevant because of its remoteness from the sea (50 km) and its height (almost 700 m). The area has bright and pleasant and relatively long summers and cold winters, full of snow. The springs are cold and rainy. The most rainy months are those between November (200 mm) and February (80 mm), the abundant snow falls between November and the beginning of April, the lakes are frozen between December and January. In one year normally fall between 1,200 and 1,400 mm. of rain. The best months to visit are the hot months of summer and early autumn.
