Split (Spalato) is the largest and most important Dalmatian city (220,000 inhabitants) and, after Zagreb, the second largest city in Croatia. In 1979 the historical complex of Split and the Diocletian's Palace were included by UNESCO in the list of world heritage sites. Split is one of the main ports of Croatia, home to textile, food, chemical, cement and shipbuilding. Split main attractions: The old part of town is included within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, built by the Roman between 293 and 305, the building is enclosed by a rectangular walls of 155 metres to 190 metres with corner towers and three double gates (Aurea, Argentea, Ferrea). In the south are the most important survivors buildings as the octagonal mausoleum of the Emperor transformed into the cathedral and the temple of Jupiter, transformed in the eighth century in the Baptistery, and the great peristyle that was the entrance to the imperial apartments. In the cathedral, interesting the Romanesque bell tower of the thirteenth century with reliefs at the base, the wooden door (1214) with 28 panels showing the Life of Christ, the wooden choir stalls (13th century), the chapel and the altar of St. Anastasio. Interesting churches are: the Pre-Romanic church of St. Martino (ninth century) and the Pre-Romanic church of Our Lady of Campanile (12th century), in the walls of the palace of Diocletian. From the Venetian patricians remain numerous palaces and religious buildings, the most striking of which are arranged around the beautiful Piazza dei Signori. Nearby are the major Roman ruins of Salona. To visit to the west, the historic resort of Seven Castles and the Bay of Castles. How to get there: In addition to by car, bus and train; Split is connected with Italy by regular ferry services departing from the ports of Ancona and Pescara. Split can be reached with the Croatian coastal lines, with ferries leaving from Rijeka or Dubrovnik, and many Croatian islands. The airport of Split connects the city several times a day with Zagreb and some European cities. Split Climate: The climate of Split is characterized by hot and dry summers and cold and rainy winters. The most rainy months are those from November to December. The best months to visit are those from May to September.
