Arles (about 55,000 inhabitants), a city of Provence, is the largest municipality in mainland France, the city set along the banks of the Rhone, is 37 km from Avignon and 31 km from Nimes, along the delta of the river. Arles, the Roman Arelate, became a Roman colony in 46 BC, and had considerable importance in the province of Gallia Narbonensis. They were constructed important monuments including an amphitheater, an arch of triumph, a theatre and the city was completely surrounded by walls, subsequently, in the fourth century AD became capital of the prefecture of Gaul. In the Middle Ages Arles was an important step for pilgrims who came to Santiago de Compostela. At the end of the nineteenth century there lived Vincent Van Gogh.

Arles Climate: Arles enjoys a privileged Mediterranean climate, with a long hot and dry summer with good temperatures throughout the year. The best months to visit are those ranging from April to September when the weather is more pleasant and temperatures are milder. The winters can be quite cold because of the mistral, violent and cold wind, but gives to the landscape of Arles its characteristic brightness.
