Climate: The majority of Germany lies within the moderate, maritime climatic zone. Large fluctuations in temperature are rare. Rain falls throughout the year. The average winter temperature is +2°C on the North German Plain and - 6°C in the mountains. Average temperatures in July range between +18°C on the North German Plain and +20°C in the sheltered valleys of the south. Exceptions include the upper Rhine plains with their very mild climate, Upper Bavaria which is influenced by the föhn, a warm Alpine wind that blows in from the south, and the Harz mountains, which have their own microclimate with harsh winds, cool summers and snowy winters. With no major mountain, the German territory has an Atlantic climate type, rainy, with annual rainfall distributed with some regularity and without a thermal extremes.

Overall, Germany has four major climatic regions: the east, with continental climate characterized by long and cold winters, warm summers and low rainfall per year; the northern, oceanic climate, mild and rainy, in the part overlooking the North Sea, more hard and dry in the Baltic area; the Rhine, with mild climate, with gentle winters and hot and dry summers; and the mountainous area of central and southern Germany, which is dominated by the continental climate having cold winters and fairly warm summers, but, Heading to the south (Swabian-Bavarian region), gradually assume the characteristics of the alpine climate, with rainy summers, often thunderstorms, and a smaller annual thermal excursion.
