Tourist Guide and Information about Greece

CLIMATE: WHEN TO GO TO GREECE
GREECE

Climate:  The climate in Greece is predominantly Mediterranean with plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures and a limited amount of rainfall. Due to the country's geographical position, its rugged relief and its distribution between the mainland and the sea, there is great variation in Greece's climate.

In summer, the dry hot days are cooled by seasonal winds called the meltemi, while mountainous regions have generally lower temperatures. The winters are mild in lowland areas, with a minimum amount of snow and ice, yet, mountains are usually snow-covered. Moreover, a common phenomenon is the occurrence of different climactic conditions during the same season (for instance, mild heat in coastal areas and cool temperatures in mountainous regions).

Athens: Athens has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry and sunny summers, mild winters and low rainfall. Average temperatures of the coldest month (January) are around 9°C, while in the hottest month (July) on 27-28 ° C. The maximum precipitation will have from October to March, but Athens, the sharp sheltered by mountains of Pindar, receives little rainfall with yearly averages of 350-400 mm. For a visit Athens the best seasons are spring and autumn, particularly in May, September and October. The summer is too hot (in Athens will often exceed the 36°C). It would be avoided in the first place the months of July and August, but we must bear in mind that even June and September are hot months. The winter is not the best season to visit Athens.

Crete: The island of Crete has a temperate Mediterranean climate, with very hot summers and winters not too cold. The rainfall is irregular, more abundant in the north than in the south, however, from June to August, practically no rain. Especially strong are the winds. The southern coastal area has a dry climate much more than the northern.

Cyclades: The Cyclades have a typically Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and milder winters. The average annual temperature ranges between 14°C and 19°C and very often sudden changes occur due to the unstable conditions.  Winters are never too cold in the Cyclades and snowfalls are rare, the colder months are January and February, where the average minimal temperature ranges from 5°C to 10°C. Summertime hot, but the sea breeze (meltemi) keeps the high temperatures of the season at a moderate level, the winds blow from northeast to northwest with high intensity between the middle of July until the middle of September. The warmest period are the months of July and August, when the medium highest temperature range between 29°C up to 35°C.  Most rainfall is received October-May. The best time to visit is in May-June and September, when it's still warm enough to swim.
