
The island of Corfu, or Kerkyra (592 sq km, 110 000 inhabitants) is located in the Ionian Sea, in the archipelago of the Ionian Islands, of which is the second island in size, the island is among the northernmost of the archipelago and faces part of the coast of Albania.
The geography of Corfu is characterized by a northern mountains area where is the highest peak of the island, mountain Pandokratoras (906 meters), a central area of hills and the southern part mainly flat. The island is very fertile and the soil allows the cultivation of vines, olives, citrus, figs and other fruit trees, areas not under cultivation are mostly covered by Mediterranean scrub.
In 2007 the ancient city of Corfu was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
