The island of Ithaca or Ithaki (96 sq km, 3 000 inhabitants), the famous island of Odysseus, is part of the Ionian island, and is located in the Ionian Sea between the northeast coast of Kefalonia and Greece. Ithaca is a mountainous island formed by two masses of land linked by a narrow isthmus, the island's capital is the town of Itháki (Vathy), which is located in central-southern part of the island. In the northern section is the highest peak of the island mountain Nirito, whose top exceeds 800 meters (806 metres).
