The island of Milos (160 sq km, 4 800 inhabitants) is an island of the Cyclades, which lies in the extreme south-western of the archipelago, east of the Peloponnese and near the islands of Kimolos and uninhabited Polyaigos which are immediately northeast of Milos. The capital of the island is the village of Plaka which is situated on a spur of rock overlooking the Gulf of Milos. The famous Venus of Milo, kept at the Louvre Museum in Paris, was found on this island in 1820. Milos is an island of volcanic origin, the Gulf of Milos is the ancient caldera of the now submerged volcano, the island is mountainous, especially in its western section, where is the highest mountain, Mount Profitis Elias ( 748 meters).
