NAXOS, CYCLADES, GREECE

The island of Naxos (429 sq km, 19 000 inhabitants) is located in the Aegean Sea, in the archipelago of the Cyclades islands, north-west of Amorgos and east of Paros. The island is the largest of the Cyclades, it's a mountainous island, whose summit Mount Zas, the highest mountain in the islands of the Cyclades, is 999 meters in height. The island is full of beaches, especially on its western side, many are also the archaeological remains scattered on the island. 

Naxos was an important commercial center during antiquity and continued to flourish until the Byzantine. Naxos in the thirteenth century as all the Cyclades became possession of the Republic of Venice as part of the Duchy of the archipelago, in 1564 it became part of the Ottoman Empire to which remained tied until 1832 when was formed the kingdom of Greece.
