Serifos Island (75 sq km, 1 400 inhabitants) is part of the Cyclades islands, is located in the western area of the archipelago, south of Kythnos and northwest of Sifnos, the island's capital is the village of Serifos, located on a hill near the south coast. The island is rocky and barren, the highest peak is Mount Tourlos (585 meters) and has very jagged coastline. Serifos was occupied by the Venetians in 1207 that held it until 1537, when the island was conquered by the Ottoman Turks.
