The island of Sifnos (73 sq km, 2 500 inhabitants) is one of the Cyclades islands, is located in the center-west of the archipelago, south-east of the island of Serifos and west of Paros and Antiparos, the capital of the island is the town of Apollonia. The island, planted with vines and olive trees, is mostly mountainous, the highest peak is Mount Profitis Ilias (680 m). Sifnos was famous in antiquity for its mines of gold and silver and as a center of Aegean ceramics production.
