HOW TO GET AND MOVE TO ICELAND: FLIGHTS, BUSES, FERRIES AND TRAINS

 

 

Airports and Flights: The Leifur Eiríksson International Air Terminal in Keflavik (48 km from Reykjavik) is the gateway for most passenger flights and air-freight flights to and from Iceland.

Frequent flights operate to Iceland from main cities in Europe and North America and many gateways are served daily. Flight times to Europe are two to four hours and 5 hours or more from North America.

Iceland is easy to reach from America with daily flights of less than five hours on Icelandair, leaving from Boston, New York (JFK), and Baltimore. Icelandair also has regular flights from Orlando, Minneapolis and San Francisco.

Iceland Express: All year: Alicante, Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, London. Summertime only: Alicante, Barcelona, Basel*, Berlin, Billund, Eindhoven*, Frankfurt Hahn, Friedrichshafen, Gothenburg*, Copenhagen, London, Paris, Stockholm, Warsaw. Copenhagen-Akureyri (North Iceland) and Copenhagen-Egilsstaðir (East Iceland).  

Icelandair: All year: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Copenhagen, Oslo, Paris, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Boston, Minneapolis, New York, Orlando. Summertime only: Barcelona, Berlin, Halifax, Helsinki, Göteborg, Bergen, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Torornto.  

SAS: Maintains regular scheduled flights to Iceland from Oslo.  

 

Domestic flights: The major domestic air carrier in Iceland is Air Iceland. Other airlines services are also available.  Air Iceland operates regular scheduled flights from Reykjavík to major domestic airports in all parts of the country. Furthermore, in co-operation with several bus companies, Air Iceland can offer an air/bus connection to over 40 towns all over Iceland.

Sea Travel:

International:

Smyril Line: maintains throughout the year a regular scheduled cruise-and car-ferry service to Iceland (Seyðisfjörður) from Hanstholm in Denmark, Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands, Scrabster in Scotland and Bergen in Norway.  

Domestic: A number of ferry lines operate services to various islands and fjords.

Buses: There is an extensive bus service to most parts of the country and to the highlands, as well as a large number of organized bus tours. Reservations are not necessary and tickets can be bought either at the bus station or from the driver.

There is an efficient bus system in Reykjavík that operates from 07:00-24:00 on weekdays (10:00-24:00 on weekends). Bus stops are marked SVR. Tickets may be purchased from the driver or from the main terminal at Hlemmur. There is no train system.  

Taxis: Taxis are readily available in Reykjavik and in the larger towns.
