Milan (Milano) (approximately 1,350,000 inhabitants, around 7,400,000 the metropolitan area) is the industrial, commercial and financial capital of Italy, and is one of the world's major commercial and financial centres. Founded by Celt Insubria (probably in 396 BC), was first occupied by the Romans in 222 BC and then finally in 196 BC In imperial times experienced a rapid development so that at the beginning of the 4 th century the emperor resided there. Repeatedly looted during the barbarian invasions, lost its role as capital, first for Ravenna, then to Pavia. In 12th century Milan became a free municipality. In 1162 Frederick I Barbarossa, razed Milan to the ground. In 1311 the Visconti ruled on Milan with the title of imperial vicars (Dukes from 1395, with Gian Galeazzo). In 14th and 15th Milan expanded its domain over most of northern Italian regions, until the Ligurian Sea and the borders of Tuscany. When Filippo Maria Visconti dies without heirs the confrontation for the succession was won by Francesco Sforza, the lordship of the family which will extend until 1535, allowing a period of peace and economic and cultural prosperity. In 1540 Milan came under Spanish domination. In 1713 the city came under the control of Austria after the War of Spanish Succession, Milan experienced a rapid recovery, fostered by the reforms of Maria Teresa, the presence of an active leadership, the vitality of its cultural centers. In the new united Italy (1859), Milan became the economic capital.
