Albufeira, originally a fishing village along the Algarve coast, from the'70s grew up to become the main tourist center of the Algarve, today it's known as the Saint-Tropez of Portugal. Albufeira offers tourists golden beaches alternating with rocky cliffs and an intense night life, full of pubs, restaurants, bars. Not far away from Albufeira, in the interior of Algarve it possible to meet the quiet and relaxing scenery typical of Portugal, a nice trip can be made for example at the village of Alte, a pretty village at the heart of leafy hills.
At the time of the Romans, Albufeira was called Baltum, from this age we can admire the remains of Roman bridges of Paderne and Guia. In the eighth century it was occupied by Arabs and was called Al-Buhera, this period was a flourishing period for the town, which became an important port of trade with North Africa. In 1250 it was conquered by King Alfonso III of Portugal. Albufeira was devastated by a number of earthquakes, the most impressive was that of 1755, after these events, the city suffered a long period of decline that lasted until the development of tourism in recent decades.
