The Republic of San Marino (Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino) is an independent state, formed by 9 municipalities (castelli), located in the Italian peninsula, between Emilia Romagna and the Marche. San Marino is not part of the European Union.  

The small country is located in the Apennine chain and its terrain is largely hilly, Mount Titano is the highest peak and reaches a height of 749 meters above sea level. The main sources of income in the economy of San Marino are tourism and banking sector.
