Bratislava (450,000 inhabitants) is the capital of Slovakia, it's found in the south-west of the country, on the banks of the Danube river, near the border with Austria and Hungary, at about tens kilometers from Vienna. The city is picturesquely situated on the banks of the Danube and has an interesting historical center formed by a mixed architecture from the various populations that have inhabited it.

Bratislava main attractions: One of the more important palaces of the historical center is the Castle, situated on a hill that dominates from a height of 82 meters the Danube, the place where the castle was constructed was in origin a celtic settlement, later it was a fortification part of the Limes Romano, in the Middle Ages became a fortified Slavic settlement, in 10th century was constructed a stone castle, than in 1430 was enlarged in gothic style from Sigismondo of Luxemburg, in 1562 and then in 1649 the construction was modified, subsequently under the government of Maria Theresa of Austria, the castle was restructured and used as headquarters of the real governor Albert von Sachsen-Teschen, that founded in the castle the gallery of printings, watercolors and designs called Albertina, that then was moved to Vienna. Destroyed accidentally from French troops in 1811, the castle remained in ruin until years '50 of nine hundred, when it was reconstructed in the shapes that it had at the time of Maria Theresa of Austria, today accommodates the Slovakian National Museum. The historical center of Bratislava is characterized from many baroque palaces, between which is the Grassalkovich palace (constructed in the 1760) today residence of the president of the Slovakian republic. Between the religious buildings are the cathedral of Saint Martin (Dóm sv. Martina), built in 14th-15th centuries in gothic style, it was the place where were crowned the kings of Hungary, it has the higher bell tower of the city (85 meters). Between the rests of the ancient town- walls the only gate still visible today is the Michalská gate of 14th century. The old municipal palace going back to 15th century accommodates the Museum of the City. The beautifulst example of classicist architecture of Bratislava is the Primaciálny palace with its room of the mirrors, this palace in 1805 was the place where was signed the peace of Pressburg (Pressburg, the ancient name of Bratislava), in the palace is an unique collection of ancient tapestry.

In the vicinities of Bratislava, on a high rock at the confluence between the Morava and the Danube, are the ruins of the castle of Devín. South of Bratislava, in the village of Rusovce, there are a castle of 19th century and the remains of the roman settlements of Gerulata.
