Slovenia (Republika Slovenija) is a presidential republic in the northern side of the Balkan peninsula, bordered to the north by Austria, and Hungary, to the east and south by Croatia, to the west by Italy; a brief corridor between Italy and Croatia reach the Adriatic Sea. It is part of the European Union. The biggest cities, as well the state capital Ljubljana, are Maribor, Kranj, Celje, Jesenice and Koper (Capodistria).
The Slovenian territory is mainly mountainous and comprises the eastern part of the Julian Alps, reaching the highest peak with Mount Triglav, 2,863 meters. Some rivers ran underground and widespread are the karstic phemomena.
